Limewash on brick, render and plaster in Melbourne homes

Which walls we limewash, and which ones we talk you out of

Limewash bonds best to porous mineral surfaces such as bare brick, cement or lime render, lime plaster and stone, because it soaks in and hardens inside the surface instead of drying as a film on top. The result is a soft, velvety matte with cloudy tonal variation, and it suits a Victorian or Edwardian brick front as well as a new rendered extension.

Inside, we limewash single feature walls as well as whole rooms. On Arabin Street in Keilor our crew applied a limewash finish to the interior walls by hand in 2026.

We’ll also tell you at the quote when limewash is the wrong call for a wall and paint would serve you better. If your brick is already painted and you want solid cover, our guide to brick wall painting explains that system instead.

How we prepare a wall for limewash

Prep decides how the finish ages, so on bare brick and render we wash off dirt, mould and efflorescence salts, repair crumbling mortar and cracked render, and give the wall time to dry out before the first coat.

Painted walls take longer, because limewash can’t grip an acrylic film, so the old paint is either stripped back to the masonry or covered with the mineral base coat the limewash maker specifies. Your quote says which, and on a house built before 1970 we strip old paint as lead-safe work.

Plasterboard needs that base coat too, since it is smooth and has nothing mineral for the lime to bond with. Skip it and the first coat soaks in unevenly, and the blotches show through every coat after it.

Before we open a tin we cover windows, timber frames, paving and garden beds, because wet lime splashes are hard to get off glass and can scorch leaves. Our trade-qualified painters then build the finish up in thin, hand-brushed coats so the variation looks deliberate, without streaks or patchy laps.

How Limewash Painting Works

Book a site visit or get an instant quote online. We check the surface, old coatings and light, then confirm the product, prep and coats in writing.

2. We paint your home.

We protect glass, floors and garden beds, dampen the wall where the product calls for it, and brush on thin coats, keeping a wet edge across each wall.

3. That's it.

We clean up, then walk the walls with you once the limewash has dried to its true colour and explain its care. The workmanship carries a 7-year warranty.

Every limewash job includes the free colour consultation, hand-brushed application and a full clean-up, and we take on a single feature wall as readily as a whole facade. Expect the colour to look darker while it’s wet; it dries noticeably lighter as it cures, so judge it once it has dried.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put limewash over existing paint?

Not straight over it. Acrylic and enamel paints leave a film that limewash can't soak into, so we either strip the old paint back to the brick or render, or apply the base coat the limewash maker specifies for painted surfaces. Your quote states which one, because stripping takes far longer than a base coat.

How is limewash different from regular paint?

Limewash is lime and pigment mixed in water, and it soaks into the surface and hardens there as it takes in carbon dioxide from the air, slowly turning back into a form of limestone. Acrylic paint, by comparison, dries as a plastic skin on top. That gives you a flat, chalky finish with movement in the colour, on a wall that can still let moisture out.

What colours can I have in limewash?

Soft, muted ones. Limewash is translucent and the lime lightens every tint, so the deep, saturated colours you can get in paint aren't possible. We colour-match tones from Bauwerk, Porter's Paints and other mineral-based ranges, and we can match a tone to stone, brick or joinery already in the room.

Which surfaces can you limewash?

Bare brick, render, lime plaster, stone and other porous masonry take it best. Plasterboard and previously painted walls can be limewashed once they have a suitable base coat. We don't limewash metal or gloss surfaces, since there is nothing there for the lime to soak into.

Can limewash go in a bathroom or kitchen?

Only away from direct splashing. Limewash breathes but it isn't waterproof, so we keep it off shower walls and splashbacks. On a low-splash wall, such as in a powder room, we can seal it with a breathable sealer the product maker recommends.

How long does a limewash job take?

Longer than painting the same wall, because each thin coat has to dry before the next and most walls need two or more. The product's data sheet sets the recoat time and the number of coats. Outside, we don't apply limewash in hot sun, strong wind, rain or frost, so exterior start dates can move with the weather and we confirm them with you in writing.

Does limewash need maintenance?

Inside, very little. Interior limewash usually needs no retouching unless the wall gets knocked or marked, and a touch-up blends in better than it would on paint because the finish is already varied. Outside, it wears back slowly with rain and sun, and a weather-facing wall typically needs a refresh coat every 5 to 10 years depending on exposure.

Is limewash eco-friendly?

Yes, it is one of the lowest-impact finishes we apply, made from burnt limestone. It carries very low or no VOCs depending on the product, and its high alkalinity discourages mould. Some modern ranges add binders, so check the data sheet if you need a figure for a particular product.

Do you guarantee limewash work?

Yes. Limewash work carries our 7-year workmanship warranty, and we hold $20M public liability insurance. Outside, the colour softens slowly as rain and sun wear the surface back. That is how limewash ages, and a fresh coat brings the colour back up.

How much does limewash cost?

We price it after seeing the wall, because the surface moves the cost more than the area does. Stripping old paint, repairing mortar, a base coat and the number of coats all change the hours. Start with the online instant quote for a ballpark, and if you are weighing limewash against polished plaster, our Venetian plaster cost guide covers that finish.

Looking after a limewashed wall

Limewash keeps hardening for weeks after we finish, so for the first few weeks keep tape, hooks and furniture off new walls and don’t scrub them. For marks at any age, a soft dry brush or a barely damp cloth is enough.

Traditional limewash can leave a light chalk on your hand, more so while it’s new, and products with added binders chalk less, which is one reason your quote names the product.

When a wall needs a refresh, we wash it down and brush a fresh coat over the old one, with none of the scraping and sanding a peeling paint job would need. If you want the house cleaned once we finish, we can book a post-paint clean through our partner, Calibre Cleaning.

Booking a limewash quote and colour consultation

The site visit, the quote and the colour consultation are all free, with no obligation to go ahead. We look at the wall, what is already on it and the light it gets, and tell you straight whether limewash suits the space or paint would do the job better.

We apply traditional and modern mineral limewash products, and we can match the tone to stone, brick, tiles or joinery you already have.

Call 1300 044 206 between 8am and 6pm, or email support@newlinepainting.com.au and we’ll get back to you within 3 business hours. If you’d like a figure before anyone visits, the online instant quote works at any hour.

What to expect from limewash before you commit

Limewash suits owners who like variation, because brush marks, cloudy patches of deeper and lighter colour and a slightly different look on each wall are all part of the finish. Over the years it also softens and fades, more so outside.

Before recommending it we check whether the surface can absorb, what is already on it, and how much moisture and sun the wall gets. Glossy walls, walls in acrylic and walls that stay damp need extra preparation, and some aren’t good candidates at all. A wall with rising damp needs the damp source fixed first, because lime lets moisture out of a wall but does nothing to stop water getting in.

If you plan to do a brick wall yourself, our guide to limewashing brick covers mixing and brushing it on, and our German smear guide explains the heavier mortar finish that hides more of the brick. If you’d rather we did it, the quote covers the prep, the protection and every coat.
