Most early failures are bond failures from skipped grinding, an old sealer or damp rising through the slab, which is why preparation takes up most of our time on site. A fresh topcoat on worn traffic lanes extends the life further.

How long before I can drive on a new epoxy floor?

Longer than before you can walk on it. Foot traffic comes first and cars come last, because hot tyres can soften and lift a coating that hasn't fully cured. The exact times are on the data sheet for the system we use and stretch out in cold weather, so we give you the dates for your floor when we finish.

Is epoxy slippery when wet?

A smooth high-gloss epoxy can be slippery with water or oil on it. Anti-slip grit goes into the topcoat on ramps, entries and anywhere you walk in with wet shoes, and a flake floor adds some grip of its own. More grit means more grip and a floor that is a little harder to mop, so we agree the level with you.

Will epoxy fix a cracked or damp concrete floor?

No. Epoxy follows the slab, so a crack that keeps moving will crack the coating again, and damp rising through the concrete pushes the coating off in blisters. We check for moisture before priming, repair cracks that have stopped moving, and tell you when a slab needs drainage or a leak fixed first. Epoxy is not a waterproofing system, so it won't stop an active leak through a wall or slab.

Can you epoxy a new concrete slab?

Yes, once it has cured. New concrete holds a lot of water, and coating it too early traps that water under the epoxy. Most systems ask for a slab around four weeks old, the product data sheet sets the minimum, and we still test the moisture before priming.

Can epoxy go on a driveway or outdoor concrete?

Not in full sun. Standard epoxy yellows and chalks under UV, and the change shows most on grey and light colours. Driveways and paths come under our driveway painting service, where the coating is chosen for sun exposure, and a covered carport can take epoxy finished with a UV-stable topcoat.

Does an epoxy floor smell while it cures?

Yes, for a while. How strong and how long depends on the product, and water-based epoxies are much milder than solvent-based ones. In a garage under the house we keep the internal door shut and ventilate through the roller door where that is secure, and we can use a low-odour system if anyone at home is sensitive to fumes.

Can you put epoxy over tiles or an old painted floor?

Sometimes. Old paint and sealers usually have to be ground off, since epoxy only holds as well as the layer under it. Tiles can be coated if they are firmly stuck down, with the grout lines filled and any loose or drummy tiles fixed first, and we decide that on site.
