Why choose us

Why Kew homeowners choose Newline Painting

Newline Painting has painted Melbourne homes for more than ten years, carries $20M public liability cover, and won both the ASBA Small Business Champion award and a Master Painters Australia Award for Excellence in 2024.

Trade-qualified painters

Our painters have a patient hand for decorative plaster. A ceiling rose or a deep cornice in a Kew home gets cut in cleanly and keeps its detail.

One crew, start to finish

The same crew carries the job from colour consult to handover. When we leave, the drop sheets are gone, the rooms are aired and the furniture is back where it started.

Background checked and insured

A larger period home can mean weeks on site, so every painter at your door is background-checked, fully insured and the same face each morning.

Rated 4.8 by our customers

In Boroondara a paint finish gets judged against some of Melbourne's best-kept houses, which is the standard we quote to.

Pricing transparency

How much does it cost to paint a house in Kew?

Painting a house in Kew typically costs between A$4,000 and A$20,000 or more, depending on the size and condition of the home. As a per-square-metre guide, standard interior work runs about A$20 to A$30, detailed work with heavy trim rises to A$60 to A$100, and exterior repainting sits around A$15 to A$60. Kew tends toward the upper end, because the period homes here carry more trim, taller walls and more preparation than a modern build. Four things do most of the work on your quote, and our painting cost guide works through three examples in detail.

Surface area and number of coats

The biggest driver. A five or six-room period home can carry well over 400m² of paintable surface across two coats, and decorative plasterwork takes a slower hand than a flat modern wall.

Prep work required

Sanding, filling, crack-stitching where the house has settled, and stripping flaking paint off tuckpointed or rendered facades. On heritage work this is usually half the labour.

Paint product specified

Dulux Wash & Wear sits a step below Haymes Ultra-Premium, and a tree-shaded exterior often calls for Wattyl Solagard. Whatever the quote lists is what goes on the wall.

Access and height

Two-storey homes and steep rooflines need scaffold or elevated access for the upper levels and eaves. We price that in at the start so it never turns up later.

From start to finish, from booking to project complete, Newline did an awsome job. Selling a property is stressful enough and they certainly took the worry out of presenting the property in top condition. Not only the painting, but small cracks or a loose piece of skirting was instantly fixed. Couldn't believe it was the same property when they had finished. 6 stars if I could.

Thank you for the great job painting our house in Camberwell for sale before Christmas! Really appreciate the work your team did expertly for our bathroom, living room, bedrooms and the external house walls. Your team was efficient and friendly. We are very happy as it added at least $200,000 to the final house sale price.

I had a great experience with the Newline painting team. They offered a competitive price to repaint the interior of my apartment and were able to accommodate my tight timeline (they started 1 day after the quote was given) and still delivered high-quality work. Communication was smooth and professional from start to finish. I’m really happy with the result and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.

All Newline Painting staff, Edward and his team were phenomenal. We needed to wait for another contractor to finish before starting the painting of the front facade of our house and despite a moving timeline, the NP team were quick to respond, courteous and were ready as soon as we were. The painting job is fantastic - the painters' attention to detail, thoroughness and efficiency was second to none. I'm very glad we went with NP as they're solution oriented and easy to work with. We'll definitely be hiring them again soon.

Ed and his team at Newline Painting did an outstanding job on repainting the interior of my home in South Melbourne! They were swift, tidy and professional throughout the entire project —5 stars wouldn’t be enough to rate their work. They weren't the cheapest quote we got but they definitely kept their promise on timeline, professionalism and their quality of work. Keep up the great work, guys! Highly recommend Newline Painting!

What we know about painting in Kew

Heritage overlays cover much of Kew

Large parts of Kew sit inside City of Boroondara heritage overlays: the Studley Park precinct, the streets around Cotham Road and Sackville Ward, and a lot of individually significant homes. If you are repainting a contributory or heritage-listed exterior and changing the colour scheme, you may need a planning permit. We check your address against the Boroondara overlay schedule before we quote a colour change, so you know where you stand.

Lead paint is the norm in Kew's older homes

The Victorian, Federation and interwar homes that make up most of Kew were nearly all painted with lead-based paint at some point before 1970. We treat every pre-1970 surface as lead until it is tested: contained wet-sanding, drop-sheet capture, HEPA clean-up and correct disposal. We do not dry-sand, so lead dust stays out of the house and the garden while your family is still living there.

Frequently asked questions

Kew painting, answered

What does it cost to paint a house in Kew?
As a planning range, standard interior work runs about A$20 to A$30 per square metre, detailed work with a lot of trim rises to about A$60 to A$100 per square metre, and exterior repainting sits around A$15 to A$60 per square metre. Whole-home projects generally land between A$4,000 and A$20,000 or more. Kew tends to sit toward the upper end of those bands, because the period homes here carry more trim, taller walls and more preparation than a modern build. Our painting cost guide works through three examples in detail.
How do you actually work out my price?
We price paintable area, not floor area. Floor area tells you how big the house is; it says nothing about how much wall, ceiling, door and trim surface gets painted. A period home with high ceilings, decorative cornices, picture rails, panel doors and full architraves can carry far more paintable surface than a modern home of the same footprint. On top of area we price the condition of the surfaces, the number of coats, the paint system each substrate needs, and access.
Why is preparation such a big part of the quote?
Because on a repaint it is most of the work. Depending on condition we wash down, scrape back loose coating, sand edges, fill damaged plaster, patch dents, gap skirtings, prime bare spots, seal stains and mask what needs protecting before a single topcoat goes on. On a heritage exterior that preparation is routinely half the labour. It is also the first thing a cheap quote quietly leaves out, which is why two quotes for the same house can differ by thousands.
What paint do you use?
We specify from Dulux, Haymes, Wattyl and Taubmans, and we match the system to the substrate rather than using one product throughout. Tree-shaded and weather-exposed Kew exteriors usually call for Wattyl Solagard; interior walls are typically a low-sheen acrylic; original timber joinery often needs an enamel rather than a wall acrylic. Whatever the quote lists is what goes on the wall.
What is actually written into the quote?
The areas to be painted, the preparation included, the number of coats, and the product system for each substrate. It also states what is excluded, typically timber replacement, plaster repairs beyond minor patching, and access equipment outside what the inspection assumed. That detail protects both sides: you know what finish you are buying, and our crew knows the standard expected on site.
My Kew home is in a heritage overlay. Can I repaint it?
Usually yes. A like-for-like repaint rarely needs a permit. If you are changing the colour scheme on a contributory or heritage-listed exterior, you may need a City of Boroondara planning permit first. Large parts of Kew are affected, including the Studley Park precinct, the streets around Cotham Road and Sackville Ward. We check your address against the Boroondara overlay schedule before quoting a colour change.
How do you handle lead paint in older Kew houses?
We treat every pre-1970 surface as lead until it is tested, which covers most of Kew's Victorian, Federation and interwar homes. That means contained wet-sanding, drop-sheet capture, HEPA clean-up and correct disposal. We do not dry-sand. Most Kew families stay in the house while we work, so the slower contained method is the only one we will use.
Can you paint apartments and common areas near Kew Junction?
Yes. We paint apartment interiors, common areas and facades around Kew Junction, Cotham Road and the Willsmere conversion. On strata work the Owners Corporation signs off the schedule before we start and the building manager stays across access, so shared entries and lifts keep working while the job runs.
Do you offer pre-sale painting for Kew homes?
Yes, and timing is the point. We schedule neutral interior and exterior refreshes around your agent's photography date, the first open and settlement, so the house presents at its best for an inner-east campaign rather than being finished the week after the photos were taken.
What happens after the job, and what does the warranty cover?
We finish with a walkthrough of every room and elevation together, and anything you flag gets touched up on the spot. The repaint then carries a written 7-year workmanship warranty covering preparation, adhesion and finish, and we hold $20M public liability cover for the time we are on site. To start, get an instant quote online or call 1300 044 206. For a large period home an on-site inspection gives the most accurate figure.
