Kitchen cabinets and cupboards we paint

Alongside kitchens we paint bathroom vanities, laundry cupboards, hallway cupboards and built-in entertainment units. If the cabinet boxes are solid and the layout still suits you, painting keeps the benchtops, splashback, sink and appliances exactly where they are, so there is no demolition and no plumber. The walls and ceiling around the cabinets can be done at the same time under our interior painting service.

Melbourne kitchens are built from timber veneer, solid timber, MDF, melamine, laminate and doors that have been painted before, and each of those takes a different primer. Glossy laminate and vinyl-wrapped doors are the hardest for paint to grip. A wrap that is already lifting at the edges has to come off before anything goes over it.

A good share of our bayside work is cabinet painting, through Bentleigh, St Kilda and Carnegie. On Springfield Avenue in St Kilda East we repainted a kitchen’s cabinet doors white above a terracotta tiled floor, and you can see it on our projects list. We have also repainted kitchen cabinets on Heritage Court in Altona.

The paint system that goes on cabinet doors

Cabinet doors get opened, knocked and wiped all day, so they need a harder coating than a wall. For most Melbourne kitchens that means a water-based enamel over a bonding primer chosen for the surface, from Dulux, Haymes, Taubmans, Berger or Wattyl, and your quote names both products. Water-based enamel cures hard, keeps its colour where the old oil enamels went yellow, and has far less smell while you are living in the house.

Sheen is the second decision, and satin or semi-gloss are the usual choices for kitchen doors. Gloss wipes clean the easiest, but under downlights it shows every dent and sanding mark, so older doors with a few knocks usually look better in satin. If you are unsure, try our paint sheen selector before the colour consultation.

3. That's it.

Once the paint has hardened we rehang doors, refit handles and clean up the dust. A 7-year workmanship warranty covers your cabinets.

A free colour consultation comes with every cabinet quote, including two-tone schemes with one colour on the overhead cupboards and another on the base cabinets or island.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my kitchen while you paint the cabinets?

Partly. We stage the work so the sink, fridge and some bench space stay usable for most of the job, though there will be days when the cupboards are empty and the doors are off. Tell us at the quote how you use the kitchen and we plan the order around it, and we tell you which days it will be hardest to cook.

What should I clear out before you arrive?

Empty the cupboards and drawers being painted, clear the benchtops and roll up any rugs. We take the doors, hinges and handles off ourselves and label every piece. If you are switching to different handles, tell us at the quote, because the old screw holes have to be filled and sanded before priming.

Do cabinets need primer before painting?

Yes, every time. Primer is what lets the topcoat grip, and the right one depends on the surface underneath. Laminate and melamine take a bonding primer, raw MDF edges soak up paint and get sealed first, and timber with knots or old stains gets a stain-blocking primer so nothing bleeds through the new colour. Our primer guide explains the different types.

Do you spray or brush kitchen cabinets?

We spray the doors and drawer fronts, because a spray gun lays the enamel down flat with no brush or roller marks. Some cabinet boxes and tight corners in an occupied kitchen are easier to finish by brush and fine roller, and the quote says which parts get which.

How soon can I use the cabinets normally?

The doors go back on once the enamel is hard enough to handle, and you can use the kitchen gently from then. Paint keeps hardening for some time after it feels dry, and the data sheet for the enamel we use gives the full cure time. Until then, open doors by the handles and keep steam from the kettle off fresh paint.

How long will painted kitchen cabinets last?

We back cabinet painting with a 7-year workmanship warranty. How long the finish looks good after that comes down to how well the doors were prepared, which enamel went on and how hard the kitchen works. Paint fails first where hands and water meet it, around handles, on the kickers and along the sink cabinet, which is why most of our hours go into degreasing, sanding and priming.

Should I paint my own cabinets or get them done professionally?

For a laundry or a few flat rental cupboards, doing it yourself is reasonable if you are patient. A main kitchen is harder. Degreasing, sanding profiled doors, keeping dust off wet paint and waiting out the cure are where DIY jobs go wrong, and the failures show at the edges and around handles within months.

Can you paint bathroom vanities and laundry cupboards?

Yes. Vanities and laundry cupboards are prepared the same way as a kitchen, and steam and splashes hit them harder. We check for water-swollen board near the basin or tub first, because swollen MDF has to be repaired or replaced before paint will sit flat on it. Walls, tiles and the bath itself come under our bathroom and bathtub painting service.

How much does kitchen cabinet painting cost?

It depends mostly on how many doors, drawer fronts and exposed panels there are, what they are made of and how much prep they need, so the size of the room tells you little. Our kitchen cabinet painting cost guide sets out typical Melbourne ranges and what a quote should list, and the instant quote gives you a first figure in about two minutes.

How we prepare cabinets before any colour goes on

Grease comes off first. Years of cooking leave a film on the doors near the cooktop and rangehood that you often can’t see, and paint will not bond to it, so every door, drawer front and panel is degreased and rinsed before it is sanded. The sanding gives the primer a key to grip without cutting through the thin veneer on the edges.

Repairs follow. We fill chips, dents and old handle holes, seal raw or swollen MDF edges, and spot-prime knots and stains so they can’t bleed through a pale colour. Between coats each face is lightly sanded to knock off dust specks, which is a large part of why a sprayed door comes out smooth. On most kitchens the spraying takes less time than the prep.

Painting the cabinets or replacing the kitchen

Painting makes sense when the cabinet boxes are sound and you are happy with the layout. You keep the stone, the tiles and the plumbing, nobody books a stonemason or a plumber, and the cost is a fraction of new joinery.

Replacement is the better call when the joinery itself has failed. Carcasses that sag, doors swollen by a leaking dishwasher or sink, and particleboard crumbling around the hinges won’t be fixed by paint, and we’ll tell you so when we look at the kitchen. Plenty of kitchens fall in between, where a cabinetmaker replaces two or three swollen panels and we paint the lot so the new ones match.

Outside Melbourne, our areas we service list shows the regional Victorian towns we travel to.

What makes a cabinet quote go up or down

The number of doors, drawer fronts and visible end panels sets the base price, and the size of the room hardly matters. Shaker and routed doors take far longer to sand and spray than flat slab doors, and an island, a pantry bank or an integrated fridge panel adds more faces to the count.

Condition comes next. Heavy grease, old paint that is already peeling and laminate that needs a bonding system all add prep hours. So does a kitchen that has to keep working while we are there, because the work has to be staged around how you use the room. Whichever quotes you compare, check whether cupboard interiors, the backs of doors and new hinges are included, because they often are not.

Protecting the rest of your kitchen while we spray

Spraying puts fine mist in the air, so masking is a big part of the setup. Benchtops, splashbacks, appliances, floors and the walls around the cabinets are covered before spraying starts, and doorways are closed off with plastic to keep spray mist and sanding dust in the kitchen. At the end we strip the masking and clean up the dust, paint and rubbish, and we carry $20M public liability insurance on every job.

Choosing a colour for your cabinets

Pick the colour in your own kitchen’s light. Downlights and a south-facing window can make one white look cold in one house and creamy in the next, which is why the free colour consultation happens on site, in the kitchen being painted.

Two-tone schemes are popular, usually a deeper colour on the island or base cabinets and something lighter on the overheads. Dark colours show dust, fingerprints and lap marks sooner than pale ones. In bathrooms and laundries the enamel has to stand up to steam every day, so we choose a system rated for wet areas there.

Looking after painted cabinets

Clean painted doors with a soft cloth, warm water and a drop of dishwashing liquid, then wipe them dry. Scourers, abrasive creams and solvent cleaners dull the sheen and wear through at the edges, so keep them away from painted joinery. Wipe up splashes near the sink and kettle straight away, and open doors by the handles, since oily fingers on the edges are where wear begins.

A chip on a sprayed door is best repaired by spraying, because a brushed patch stands out on a sprayed finish.

What kitchen cabinet painting costs

The price comes from the number of doors, drawer fronts and panels, what they are made of and how much prep they need, and the written quote lists each of those. Our kitchen cabinet painting cost guide gives typical Melbourne ranges for small, medium and large kitchens, explains why sprayed doors cost more than a brushed finish, and shows what quotes often leave out.
