Which fences we paint

We paint timber paling and picket fences, Colorbond and other steel fences, aluminium fences, concrete fences, and the gates, balcony railings and retaining walls that go with them.

Timber is the biggest swing in the job. A newer paling fence with sound boards is straightforward. An older boundary fence with flaking paint, loose palings and mould needs real prep before it is worth painting. On a timber picket fence in Yarraville (Schild Street) the hardwood was exposed and needed a full sand before it would hold paint. We repainted it white.

Colorbond gets underestimated. It is pre-finished steel, so people assume it is quick. Newer panels can carry residue from manufacture or installation, and older ones go chalky or start corroding around scratches, fixings and cut edges. We clean, abrade where needed and spot-treat before the primer goes on.

What changes the price of a fence painting job

Length matters less than condition. Two fences of the same length can sit in very different price brackets because one needs a wash and a sound repaint, and the other needs mould or rust treatment, sanding, filling and hand work around every damaged section.

These are the things that move a quote:

The material. Rough-sawn timber soaks up roughly twice the paint of a Colorbond panel.
The condition of the existing coating, and whether it needs scraping.
One side or both sides.
Access: shrubs through the palings, tight side passages, uneven ground, and a neighbour’s structure hard against the boundary all slow the work.
Gates, posts, capping and rails, and whether they are in the scope.
Whether the fence needs mould treatment, rust treatment or minor repairs first.

Can you paint a Colorbond fence?

Yes. Colorbond is pre-finished steel, so the paint only holds if the surface is prepared. We clean off residue and chalking, abrade where needed, treat any rust or corrosion around scratches and fixings, then use a primer suited to metal before the finish coats.

Should I paint or stain my timber fence?

Paint if the fence is weathered or faces the sun. It gives more UV protection and lasts longer between jobs. Stain suits a natural timber look but is semi-transparent and usually needs recoating every two to three summers.

Do you have to sand and wash a fence before painting?

Yes. We wash off dirt and mould, let it dry, then scrape and sand where the old coating is flaking. Bare or patched areas get primer. Skipping these steps is the usual reason a fence peels early.

Do I need to paint both sides of the fence?

No, it's your choice. We can paint one side or both. Say which when you ask for a quote, because it changes the price. If the other side faces your neighbour, speak to them before we start so we can get access.

How long does it take to paint a fence?

It's a short job on site, but it depends on the length of the fence, its condition, one side or both, and the weather. The fence has to dry after washing before we prime or paint. Ask us how many visits to expect.

Can you paint a fence in winter or when it's wet?

Not on wet timber. If a fence is still holding moisture, the coats fail early. We wait for it to dry between washing and priming and between coats, so a damp week can add days. Ask us how a wet week affects the schedule.

Should you paint or stain a timber fence?

We paint or stain timber fences, and we match the colour to your house. Paint is the better choice for most tired fences. It gives more UV protection and goes longer between maintenance than stain. Stain is semi-transparent, so the grain shows, and it usually needs recoating every two to three summers.

Choose stain if you want a natural timber look and don’t mind redoing it more often. Choose paint if the fence is weathered, patchy or facing the sun. If you are painting a front timber fence a dark colour, be aware that dark colours absorb more heat. Tell us at the inspection and we will talk through colour options.

Painting a fence you share with a neighbour

A boundary fence has a neighbour on the other side. When you ask for a quote, we ask whether you want one side or both sides painted, because that is one of the biggest changes to the price.

If the outside face sits on a shared boundary, talk to your neighbour early so we can get access to their side. Plants, bins, an air-conditioning unit or a pergola against the fence slow the work, and the quote should allow for it.

How long a fence takes and what the weather does to it

Painting a fence is a short job on site, but the order matters. Washing comes first, and the fence then has to dry properly before sanding, priming or top coats. In a damp Melbourne week that wait is not optional. Coats rolled onto timber that is still holding moisture fail early.

How long your job takes depends on the length of the fence, its condition, how many sides we are painting and the weather. Ask us how many site visits to expect and how a wet day affects the schedule. Strong UV, damp stretches and quick temperature swings are hard on exterior coatings, which is another reason we do not skip primer or the second coat.

How we prep and paint a fence

We wash the fence first to take off dirt, mould and loose paint. Then it dries. We scrape and sand where the old coating is failing, make minor repairs, and spot-prime bare timber, metal or patched areas. Masking goes up around paving, plants and walls. We recommend two full coats, applied by roller, brush or spray depending on the fence. We clean up when we finish.

Prep is where a fence job lasts or fails. A coating put over mildew, chalk or loose paint can look fine on handover day and let go within a season or two.

Looking after your fence after we’ve painted it
