What we repaint outside your house

We repaint walls, fascias, gutters, gables, eaves, doors, windows, verandahs and pergolas, and the fences, garages and sheds that go with them. Period exteriors are slow, careful work. Brackets, fretwork and sash windows take brushwork rather than a roller, as on the heritage Victorian we repainted on Hawthorn Grove in Hawthorn, cast iron balconies included. We treat any paint laid before 1970 as lead-safe work.

How we prepare and paint a house exterior

The order of work is wash-down, scraping, sanding, filling and caulking, timber repairs, spot priming, then two finish coats. Painting is rarely the slow part. The drying and repair windows between stages are, especially on a house whose walls dry at different rates.

Rotten timber, open joints and failed sealant have to be repaired before paint goes on, otherwise the new coat bridges over the failure and lifts early. Do I need to do any prep before you start?

No. We do the prep: washing, scraping, sanding, filling, caulking, masking and priming. It helps if you clear access before the crew arrives: move outdoor furniture, trim back plants and clear the paths, so the painters can work efficiently. We clean up when we finish.

What paint do you use outside?

Dulux Weathershield Low Sheen, Dulux Weathershield Render Refresh, British Paints 4 Seasons Low Sheen and Dulux Aquanamel Gloss, among others, and Wattyl Solagard on exposed walls. On weatherboard we usually specify a 100% acrylic exterior system over the right primer, because it moves with the timber. Trims and heritage details can take enamel. The quote names the primer and the finish coats.

What are the best colours for exterior painting?

The right one suits your house and your street and comes in a durable range. A colour consultation is free with every quote, and we take you through palettes on site. Recent examples are a single-fronted terrace on Kay Street in Carlton in pale blue-grey with a red front door, and a white Albert Park terrace with dark green trim.

How long will exterior paint last?

It depends on the prep, the paint system and the exposure. South-facing walls stay damp longer, west-facing timber takes more UV, and bayside houses deal with salt. When is the best time to paint the outside of a house in Melbourne?

Spring and autumn. Painters aim for about 15 to 20 degrees with moderate humidity so the coating does not dry too fast and leave lap marks. Summer runs too hot on exposed walls. In winter, surfaces stay damp longer after rain and dew, and the south side dries last. A wet week can add days, because each stage waits on the one before it drying.

How long does it take to paint the outside of a house?

It depends on the condition of the house, its height and the weather. The sequence is wash, dry, scrape and sand, repair, prime, then two finish coats, and the waiting between stages is usually longer than the painting. Two-storey and three-storey homes need more setup, and sometimes scaffold. We confirm your dates in writing after the inspection.

Melbourne exteriors age unevenly. South-facing walls stay damp longer, west-facing timber takes more UV, and bayside houses deal with salt and wind-driven moisture. On west-facing walls in Brighton, Hampton and Elwood we specify Dulux Weathershield or Wattyl Solagard and we do not shortcut the wash-down before priming.

Every exterior job carries a 7-year workmanship warranty and $20M public liability insurance. The two warranties on a painted house are different. Ours covers our labour, prep and application. The paint maker’s warranty covers the coating itself, and the two fail for different reasons. Ask any painter for proof of insurance before they start. Brick, render, timber and concrete need different prep

What the house is made from changes the system, the labour and the amount of paint. Porous brick and render need more washing, more product and a primer that suits the surface. Painted brick can turn out powdery or damp underneath, which slows the prep. On timber we spot-prime bare areas and use a stain-blocking primer where tannin shows through. Looking after your exterior paint

A soft wash once or twice a year removes salt, dust and road grime. Clear gutters and downpipes so overflow does not run down fresh paint, keep mulch, soil and plants off painted boards, and avoid high-pressure blasting, which can force water behind failed joints.
