Book Venetian Plastering
A breathable mineral finish with soft movement in the colour, suited to solid brick, render and heritage walls that need to let moisture out. We mix and apply it on site, so the depth of the finish is set to the room rather than pulled from a tin.

The three families are priced and scheduled differently because the risks are different. Knowing which one your job sits in explains most of the gap between two quotes.
Interior painting is a protection and cutting-in job. The cost sits in masking, patching, and the number of separate surfaces: walls, ceiling, cornice, skirting, architraves and doors are six different rates in one room. Trim in oil-based enamel takes longer to recoat than an acrylic wall. Work can run year round because the building controls the conditions.
Exterior painting is a substrate job. Weatherboard, render, brick and fibro each want a different primer, and the existing coating decides how much scraping, sanding and stain-blocking comes first. Access matters too: a two-storey elevation with no side clearance carries scaffold or boom cost. Winter still works in Melbourne, but application windows narrow around dew point and rain.
Venetian plaster, limewash, epoxy floors and bathtub resurfacing are trade-skill jobs rather than volume jobs. They are priced on the finish and the applicator, not the square metre alone. These are the services where the sample pass matters, so we do one on your wall before committing the room.
These are not upgrades and they are not line items you have to ask for. They are in every written quote we issue, on every service on this page.
Painters in Melbourne generally price residential repaints by the square metre of paintable surface, not by the hour, and the rate moves with the surface and the amount of preparation involved. The ranges below are planning figures, not quotes.
| Project type | What drives the number | Typical range (AUD) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard interior repainting | Sound walls, limited trim, straightforward access | $20 to $30 per m2 |
| Detailed interior work with doors, architraves and trim | Cutting in, enamel recoat times, heritage joinery | $60 to $100 per m2 |
| Exterior repainting | Substrate, existing coating condition, height and access | $15 to $60 per m2 |
| Whole-home project, small apartment through to large house | Total scope, storeys, prep load | $4,000 to $20,000+ |
Those figures come from Australia-wide house painting cost data and line up with what Melbourne owners see in practice. A modern apartment with sound walls sits near the bottom of each band. A Federation home with detailed timberwork and patched plaster does not. To turn a band into a number for your own place, use the painting cost calculator, then book a site visit so the estimator can price the condition rather than the floor area.
The same four steps apply whether the job is one bedroom or a full exterior.
Call, or send the rooms and rough sizes through the quote form. We will tell you on the spot whether it needs a site visit.
An estimator inspects surfaces, condition and access, then issues an itemised fixed price listing coats, products and exclusions.
You get a plannable date and a realistic duration, not a rolling maybe. Occupied homes and trading sites are scheduled around you.
We hand over clean, walk the work with you, fix anything on the punch list, and register the 7-year warranty.
Newline Painting has won industry awards every year from 2020 to 2024, including the 2024 Master Painters Association Award for Excellence and a 2024 Australian Small Business Champion Award.
Every service on this page is available across metropolitan Melbourne and selected regional Victoria. These are the suburbs we are asked for most often, each with its own page covering local housing stock, access and heritage conditions.
Most Melbourne painting companies, including us, quote a fixed price for the job rather than an hourly rate, because an hourly rate gives you no protection against a slow job or a thin prep. Where hourly figures are quoted in the market they generally sit between $45 and $75 an hour per painter, but that number tells you nothing about how many hours the job needs. A written fixed-price quote listing coats and products is the only figure worth comparing.
A whole-home repaint runs from roughly $4,000 for a small apartment to $20,000 and above for a large house. A typical 3-bedroom Melbourne home falls between those ends, and where it lands depends on whether you are painting interior only or interior and exterior, how much trim and joinery is involved, and the condition of the existing coating. Use the painting cost calculator for a planning figure, then get a site quote for a real one.
A single room usually takes one to two days. A three-bedroom interior typically runs four to seven working days. A full exterior on a standard home takes about one to two weeks once preparation, weather windows and recoat times are allowed for. Preparation is the variable, not the painting: on a weathered exterior it can take longer than the coating itself.
Choose by what you are trying to achieve rather than by surface. If you are selling, that is pre-sale painting. If the outside is chalky, peeling or faded, that is exterior painting. If the house feels tired inside, that is interior painting. If one element looks dated but the rest is fine, there is usually a targeted service for it, such as cabinet painting or feature wall painting. If you are unsure, call and describe the problem.
Yes. We paint offices, retail fitouts, strata common areas and warehouses through our commercial painting service, and we schedule around trading hours, including nights and weekends where a site cannot be closed. All commercial work carries the same $20 million public liability cover and 7-year workmanship warranty as residential jobs.
We use Dulux, Haymes, Taubmans, Berger and Wattyl. The specific product and coat count is named in your quote rather than described generically, so you know exactly what is going on the wall. If you have a preferred brand or an existing colour to match, we will specify to it.
Yes. Washing, sanding, filling, caulking and spot-priming are part of every quote, and the quote states how much preparation is allowed for. Preparation is where cheap quotes usually differ from realistic ones, so it is the first thing to compare when you have two prices in front of you.
No. Most of our work is in occupied homes. We work room by room, protect floors and furniture, keep one living area and a bathroom usable, and clean up at the end of each day. For whole-house exteriors you can stay in the property throughout.
Lead times move with the season, and spring and pre-Christmas are the busiest windows. Small interior scopes can often be booked within a fortnight. Whole-home and exterior projects usually need more notice, which is why we give you a firm start date at quote stage rather than a rolling estimate.
Every job carries a 7-year written workmanship warranty covering the application itself, which is separate from the paint manufacturer’s product warranty. If something in our work fails inside that period, we come back and put it right.
Tell us what needs painting and we will give you an itemised fixed price, a start date you can plan around, and a 7-year warranty on the work.
