Newline Painting are professional painters working across Kew and the wider City of Boroondara. Most of what we do here is house painting, interiors, exteriors, heritage facades and pre-sale refreshes, from the big Victorians off Cotham Road to the apartments at Kew Junction. We also paint commercial and strata property across the inner east. Every job comes with one itemised written price, a start date locked in before we begin, and a 7-year workmanship warranty.

We paint interior walls, ceilings, cornices, ceiling roses and timber joinery in Kew's Victorian and Federation homes. Low-odour paints keep the house liveable while we work.

We paint exteriors in render, tuckpointed brick and weatherboard on period and interwar homes, with full preparation and lead-safe handling on anything built before 1970.

We repaint homes before they go to market, in neutral interior and exterior schemes scheduled around your agent's photography, open inspections and settlement dates.
Book pre-sale painting →
We paint apartment interiors, common areas and facades. The Owners Corporation signs off the schedule up front and the building manager stays across each stage.

We paint single feature walls in living rooms, studies and hallways, colour-matched to the rest of the home and to how the light falls in the room.

We paint offices, shopfronts, body-corporate and strata property across the inner east, working after hours where a site has to keep trading through the job.
Book commercial painting →Painting a house in Kew typically costs between A$4,000 and A$20,000 or more, depending on the size and condition of the home. As a per-square-metre guide, standard interior work runs about A$20 to A$30, detailed work with heavy trim rises to A$60 to A$100, and exterior repainting sits around A$15 to A$60. Kew tends toward the upper end, because the period homes here carry more trim, taller walls and more preparation than a modern build. Four things do most of the work on your quote, and our painting cost guide works through three examples in detail.
The biggest driver. A five or six-room period home can carry well over 400m² of paintable surface across two coats, and decorative plasterwork takes a slower hand than a flat modern wall.
Sanding, filling, crack-stitching where the house has settled, and stripping flaking paint off tuckpointed or rendered facades. On heritage work this is usually half the labour.
Dulux Wash & Wear sits a step below Haymes Ultra-Premium, and a tree-shaded exterior often calls for Wattyl Solagard. Whatever the quote lists is what goes on the wall.
Two-storey homes and steep rooflines need scaffold or raised access for the upper levels and eaves. We price that in at the start so it never turns up later.
Rate bands are only useful once you put them against a real house. Take a period family home in Kew, high ceilings, deep cornices and full architraves.
of paintable interior surface, which is the number that actually drives the quote, not the floor area.
per square metre for standard interior work.
indicative range for that house across two coats, before prep condition and access are assessed.
That is a planning figure, not a quote. Preparation condition, colour change, ceiling height and access move it, which is why we measure on site and give you one itemised written price rather than a rate.

Large parts of Kew sit inside City of Boroondara heritage overlays: the Studley Park precinct, the streets running off Cotham Road, and a long list of individually significant homes. If you are repainting a contributory or heritage-listed exterior and changing the colour scheme, Boroondara may need to approve it first. We check your address against the overlay schedule before we quote, so the permit question is settled before anyone books a start date.

Nearly every Kew house standing before 1970 has lead-based paint under the later coats, and the suburb's Victorian, Edwardian and interwar stock sits squarely in that bracket. We test before we prep. Old coats come off wet, inside dust containment, and the waste leaves site bagged. Dry-sanding never happens on our jobs: it is the one thing guaranteed to put lead residue through a family home.

Kew sits above a bend in the Yarra, and the elms and planes that shade Studley Park Road and the Boulevard keep southern walls damp long after rain, while the unshaded western elevations take the full afternoon sun. One product across the whole house ages unevenly here. We spec each elevation separately: mould-resistant systems on the shaded side, UV-stable membranes where the sun is hardest.
Kew is not only period houses. Willsmere, the former Kew Asylum, is now a large heritage apartment conversion, and there is a solid stock of blocks along High Street and around Kew Junction. That work runs to different rules: owners-corporation sign-off, common-property scheduling, access windows and painting around residents. We have done strata interiors, common areas and apartment exteriors across Boroondara and we handle the building liaison ourselves.

Recent Newline Painting jobs on Kew and Kew East streets. Our own photos, our own crew, and the same written warranty on each one. On a period home the preparation is usually about half the labour, and it is what decides how long the finish lasts.
Newline Painting has painted Melbourne homes for more than ten years, carries $20M public liability cover, and won both the ASBA Small Business Champion award and a Master Painters Australia Award for Excellence in 2025.
Our painters have a patient hand for decorative plaster. A ceiling rose or a deep cornice in a Kew home gets cut in cleanly and keeps its detail.
The same crew carries the job from colour consult to handover. When we leave, the drop sheets are gone, the rooms are aired and the furniture is back where it started.
A larger period home can mean weeks on site, so every painter at your door is background-checked, fully insured and the same face each morning.
In Boroondara a paint finish gets judged against some of Melbourne's best-kept houses, which is the standard we quote to.
Start with a call or the online form. Either way it is free, and you get one itemised written price covering scope and colours, with a start date attached to it.
Your crew preps each surface to suit its age, then lays on premium paint in clean, even coats. Floors, gardens and furniture stay covered until the last coat is dry.
We finish with a walkthrough of every room and elevation together. Anything you flag gets touched up on the spot, and the repaint carries a written 7-year warranty.
Kew sits in the middle of the patch this crew works: Cobden Street, White Avenue in Kew East and the streets running off Cotham Road are all inside their usual week. The painter who prices your home is one of the painters who turns up to paint it, so nothing gets lost between the quote and the first coat. Meet the full team →Meet the full team →
