What you are painting with

Times start from the reference condition on the tin, 25°C and 50% relative humidity.

Product typePick the closest class. We never name a single product.
Which coat is this?Coat one meets the substrate. Later coats sit on a sealed film.
Substrate porosityApplies to coat one only.

Conditions on the day

Melbourne swings a long way between a still July morning and a dry February afternoon.

Air temperatureDegrees Celsius, in the shade beside the surface.
Relative humidityPer cent. Your phone weather app is close enough.
AirflowWindows open, a fan running, or a sealed room.

Your timing

So we can tell you whether the second coat lands before you lose the light.

What this calculator assumes
  • Base touch dry, recoat and full cure times are the Australian reference figures measured at 25°C and 50% relative humidity, at the spread rate on the tin.
  • Temperature, humidity, airflow and porosity multipliers apply to touch dry and recoat only. Full cure is a chemical process and is reported unadjusted.
  • Temperature and humidity multipliers are interpolated linearly between the published points: 30°C 0.7, 25°C 1.0, 20°C 1.2, 15°C 1.6, 12°C 2.2, 10°C 3.0, and 40% 0.9, 50% 1.0, 65% 1.3, 75% 1.7, 85% 2.5.
  • Solvent-based and oil products raise the temperature multiplier to the power 1.2 and the humidity multiplier to the power 0.6, because solvent release is temperature led. Water-based products raise the humidity multiplier to the power 1.2, because water has to leave the film.
  • Coat one uses the porosity you chose. Coat two and later sit on a sealed film, so the sealed multiplier of 1.15 applies instead.
  • Hard dry is reported as the midpoint between touch dry and safe recoat. It is the point the film takes light handling, not the point it takes another coat.
  • Below 10°C and above 85% relative humidity are hard blocks. Do not apply. The film will not coalesce and the finish will fail.
  • Applied over a heated surface in direct sun, skinning happens faster than the film dries underneath. Work in the shade and follow the sun around the house.
